summary Since 1999, the CLEO, “Centre pour l’édition électronique ouverte”, (“Centre for open electronic publishing”), has been developing Revues.org, the oldest French social sciences portal, which now gathers more than one hundred and fifty journals. The centre promotes the dissemination of scientific literature in the humanities and social sciences by developing electronic publishing. It federates scholarly journals, provides them with a technological support and helps them to settle their visibility on the internet. It also fosters the learning of skills linked to electronic publishing by organizing trainings and by producing documentation. This project originates from the French scientific community. All journals follow academic and scholarly standards in the fields of history, politics, geography, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc. They are owned by learned societies, major research centres, university institutes or private publishers. Most of them receive funds from the CNRS, the CNL (Centre national du livre in France) or universities.
