summary This paper presents major findings from a research project that attempts to systematically compare Web-based and print-journal-based scholarly communication, highlighting some considerable differences between the two formats of communication, which provide evidence for the rise of a “two-tier” scholarly communication system. Implications for Open Access are also discussed.
